Albright, Jacob

Albright, Jacob
(1759–1808)
   Sect Founder.
Albright was born in Pennsylvania and grew up as a Lutheran. As a young man he served as a soldier and later he became a successful brickmaker. In 1791, after the deaths of several of his children, he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and began a new career as a preacher. When his efforts were rejected by the Methodist leadership, he created his own organisation with himself as its first Bishop. At first the new body was known as the ‘so-called Albright people’, but it later became the Evangelical Association. Arminian in doctrine, the Church was organised on Methodist lines. In 1922 it became the Evangelical Church and, after amalgamation with the United Brethren in Christ in 1946, the Evangelical United Brethren Church.
